If you’re a close follower of the NHL with a good knowledge of player injuries and goaltender play, then hockey can be one of the easier sports to bet on.

The most popular type of bet is the moneyline – a simple wager on who is going to win. The lower number of goals compared to other sports means that spreads are less popular. However, there is still an equivalent – known in hockey as a “puckline”.

The strategies

Puckline betting frequently offers better odds than moneyline wagers because of the point spreads required to win. If you’re confident about the final score, then pucklines allow you to bet on the favorite team without laying down such a high stake. If you’re really confident in both a win for your team and a spread of points, then you could even parlay your moneyline and puckline bets – combining the two for a bigger payout.

Zig-zag theory is a popular NHL betting strategy during the playoffs. In a best-of-seven series, a team that has lost their previous game is believed to be more likely to win the next time around as they push for a comeback. Of course, this isn’t going to happen every time – consider the general quality of each team but also how injuries or a star goaltender on a hot streak might lead to a different result.

While home ice may not be as big an advantage as in other sports, you can still follow a handicapping strategy based on the NHL schedule. Hockey is one of the most physical sports, and injuries play an important part over a season. Teams can be scheduled for grueling stretches both at home and on the road with a high number of games taking place in a relatively short period.

Consider the team’s travel schedule and how that might impact – will fatigue hurt performance, or will the team have bonded during a long road trip? When is the star player likely to be rested? Does the lineup have a strong set of goalies, or will resting the starting goalie create a big weakness? Teams may play that much harder during the games most important to them or when rivalries are involved.

In the end, it is going to be your knowledge that will help you pick the best NHL betting strategy. Make sure to keep ahead of all the updates here and, most importantly, know who is on the ice and who is resting.
